Bill Would Create Online Red Light District

By LJ Staff

Even though a Congressional
commission observed in 2000 that it might be unconstitutional for Congress to
try segregate adult web sites
, a new bill to do that has been introduced by
Sen. Mary Landrieu, (D-LA). It would instruct the Internet Corporation for
Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to set up a new domain name–with a suffix
like .prn–for sex sites. ICANN
has previously voted against
setting up such a domain. More recently, a
bill that would establish a .kids domain limited to child-friendly web sites has
moved ahead
. Landrieu’s bill, the “Family Privacy Protection Act,” also
would require sexually related spam to be clearly labeled and would make it
illegal to use hidden cameras for voyeuristic purposes.
