Fifth Potter Outing Sets Sales Records

By LJ Staff

Though Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix was roughly a year
late, fans weren’t dissuaded from ravenously gobbling it up in unprecedented
numbers. Scholastic Inc., the book’s domestic publisher, reports that the book
sold a stunning five million copies within the first 24 hours of its release.
Bloomsbury PLC, the book’s British publisher, sold an additional 1.8 million
copies the first day, also believed to be a record in the UK. Amazon.com
delivered 789,000 pre-ordered copies on June 21, making it the single most
successful day in the online bookseller’s history. Libraries across the country
report that all available copies were checked out very quickly after opening
their doors and that reserves on the book are
