ALA Policies Criticized in Montgomery County, TX

By LJ Staff

In Montgomery County, Conroe, TX, the library battles have continued, a year
after children’s sex ed books were returned to the shelves, leading library
Director Jerilynn Williams to win a PEN award. Now
County Judge Alan Sadler is proposing more than 25 changes in how children’s
books are selected and displayed, according to the Houston Chronicle. The
changes include requiring age appropriate materials and removing American
Library Association (ALA) language advocating the freedom to read and
prohibiting censorship. A letter from one local activist proposes instead a
“Freedom to Exercise Good Judgment Statement.” Sadler even wanted the library
system to leave ALA, but its membership actually lapsed three years
ago.
