Amazon Plan to Digitize Books Raises Questions

By LJ Staff

According to numerous recent articles, Amazon.com is in the process of
developing a searchable online archive of the full-text of thousands of
nonfiction titles. Although they are negotiating with major publishers, they had
asked the publishing companies to maintain confidentiality until the expected
launch sometime this fall. The project is assumed to be a competitive move
against Google and Yahoo. When Amazon was approached for details of the plan, a
spokesperson declined to comment to the New York Times. They have told
publishers they will be limiting the amount of an individual title that can be
read online by requiring users to register. They also suggest that the archive
will actually boost book purchasing.
