More Cuts for NYC PLs? Brooklyn PL Confirms $1M Gift

By LJ Staff

The new budget proposed by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg calls for few cuts in services, apparently sparing libraries, according to several news reports. However, a follow-up report in the New York Daily News says that the City Council has identified more than $200 million in cuts, including $11.8 million to libraries, which were not in budget documents released previously. “I don’t know if we can maintain five-day service on this,” one Council official said. Also Brooklyn Public Library officials confirmed that it, too, had received a $1 million anonymous gift, as had the Queens Borough Public Library. The third library operating in New York City, the New York Public Library, however, could not confirm that it had received such a gift.
