University Of Nevada, Reno Gets Record Gift

By LJ Staff

A $10 million gift will help the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) to begin construction next year on a new $66 million “Knowledge Center.” The donation comes in $5 million gifts from Reno-based International Game Technology (IGT), a slot machine manufacturer, and from former IGT Chairman Chuck Mathewson and his wife, Ann. At a news conference, UNR President John Lilley said the $10 million donation is the “largest single gift ever made to a UNR campus-wide project.” The new state-of-the art building will replace UNR’s library. That library was built in 1962, and designed to hold roughly 200,000 volumes serving less than 3000 students. UNR today has about 15,000 students, and the library houses over one million volumes. Lilley told reporters that UNR’s new “knowledge center” would be “the physical, intellectual and cultural hub of this university,” and said it was part of a “new concept of what a library should be.” Construction is expected to start next spring and be completed by 2008.
