9/11 Commission Head Tells Congress to Fund Embassy Libraries

By LJ Staff

First the 9/11 Commission recommended rebuilding foreign library programs, then co-Chairman Thomas Kean repeated the recommendation in a hearing before the House Government Reform Subcommittee. Commented Emily Sheketoff, executive director of the American Library Association’s Washington Office, ‘Just as libraries in the United States serve as points of access to information and education for communities across the nation, libraries housed in U.S. embassies have long been havens for foreign students and others interested in learning about the United States. By rebuilding the foreign library program, the United States can ensure that opportunities afforded to Americans by libraries will be available to the people of other nations.’
