ALA Midwinter Curley Lecture to feature String Quartet

By LJ Staff

The 6th Arthur Curley Memorial Lecture, held annually at the Midwinter Meeting of the American Library Association (ALA), will feature the Mendelssohn String Quartet rather than a speaker. "The performance marks the first time music has been featured in the lecture series, which aims to examine different aspects of the broad intellectual, cultural, artistic and political life in which librarians play a crucial role," ALA said in a statement. The event is on Saturday, January 15, 2005, ast 3 pm in the Hynes Convention Center, Room 302-304. The Quartet will perform Janáèek’s Quartet No. 1 ("Kreutzer Sonata") and Brahms’ Quartet in A minor, Op. 51, No. 2. Previous Curley lecturers were Jim Hightower, radio talk show host; Lewis Lapham, author and Harper’s Magazine editor; Andrei Codrescu, author, journalist, and professor; Brenda Dixon Gottschild, writer and performer; and Richard Rodriguez, author and essayist.
