NY Times Says Google Plan Rekindles Public Domain

By LJ Staff

In an editorial December 21, the New York Times hailed the Google plan to digitize millions of books as one that "may redefine the nature of the Internet and the university." The newspaper noted that, since the project will be limited to books not under copyright, it "could well kindle a new appreciation of the significance of the public domain." Meanwhile, the project should give Google, libraries, and publishers "time to sort out the problem of creating a comprehensive digital library of books that are currently under copyright." Finally, the newspaper warned about technological change, "The Google project will enhance the usefulness of the books it encompasses, but it in no way will render them obsolete."
