$2 Million Library Bequest Left to Newport News, VA

By LJ Staff

Newport News Public Library System, VA, has received a $2 million gift, its largest ever, from a local doctor who died earlier this year. General practitioner Herbert Neisser, 93, retired in 1981. His wife predeceased him, and they had no children. While Neisser was a patron of the Main Street library, staffers didn’t particularly recall him. The library system has five facilities. Neisser made the bequest to the Main Street branch, with no other restrictions on its use. That particular facility operates on a budget of about $500,000 annually, which doesn’t include the salaries of part-time staff or cost of materials. The board hasn’t decided yet how the money will be spent, but a speaker series is a possibility. Another idea is the preservation and restoration of the Virginiana Room and the digitization of some of its material.
