Are Smartphones the Future of ebooks?

By LJ Staff

Speaking at the annual International Digital Publishing Forum conference, Nartion Gorner, Mobipocket’s senior software architect, asserts that PDAs and BlackBerry’s are endangered species. He predicts that in five or so years, everything – and that means Internet, email, and all assorted downloads including ebooks – all will be handled by smartphones. Screens are getting larger and resolution is improving to the point where the public will read their phone screens. Mobility, he says, is key. People don’t want to have to download files to the their PC only to have to copy them over to the PDA, they want wireless access through a single device, and that magic wand will be a smartphone by Nokia and other manufacturers.
