In UK Library, Say Goodbye to “Librarian”

By LJ Staff

The Hampshire library service in the UK is restructuring, with some 40 percent of the 60 librarian positions on the block, and another 30 percent downgraded. Staffers will be called managers, library officers, and "service development officers," but not librarians. Library officers will require public service skills and book knowledge, but not a librarian degree. Librarian John Sadden, a union steward, told the Basingstoke Gazette, "It is quite radical what they are doing and quite brutal."
