Book News: Bantam Imprint Simultaneously To Release Titles in Trade/Mass Market

Bantam is launching a new imprint, Bantam Discovery, next February that will take the bold step of simultaneously releasing paperback titles in trade and mass market format. The dual releases is an experiment to determine whether format is blocking sales and if offering a title in both will generate more profit. The first book in the line will be Tess Simpson’s British bestseller, The Adultery Club, with a reported 11 additional general fiction and romance titles forthcoming at a rate of one per month. LJ Reader’s Shelf columnist and collection development expert Neal Wyatt told LJ that she doubts many libraries “would buy both unless it was for a specific reason —such as [they] had trade already but were buying extra multiple copies later on for a book group. Then [they] might buy the mass market.” Wyatt asserts that “libraries would order the one format they find works best for them based on shelving, processing, and circulation. My biggest concern would be the cataloging process—if the two formats had two different ISBN numbers that would mean two different records in the catalog. Beyond making it just more difficult to really know what you have, it splits the holds which complicates filling requests as quickly as possible.”
