Salt Lake City to Start Again on Director Search

By Norman Oder

It looked like a lock for Clyde Scoles, longtime director of Ohio’s Toledo-Lucas County Public Library, who was the sole remaining candidate to be director of the Salt Lake City Public Library (SLCPL), which lost director Nancy Tessman to retirement. But after visiting Salt Lake City in the past week to tour the system’s six branches and meet with library staff, both he and the library agreed that the job was not the “right fit,” he told the Salt Lake Tribune. Scoles, coming from well-funded Ohio, said he was concerned that the library’s budget was too low. In turn, acting co-director Britton Lund told the newspaper that the search committee seeks a director who will maintain SLCPL’s “very unique participatory-management style.”
