Peter Bromberg | Movers & Shakers 2008

Transformer

Peter Bromberg’s job is to provide transformative library services, and, oh, does he ever. In his six years at the South Jersey Regional Library Cooperative (SJRLC), he’s spearheaded several major projects. They include the popular 24/7 reference service QandANJ.org, New Jersey’s Train-the-Trainer program, and the “Trading Spaces” demonstration project at Mount Laurel Library, described in the 2006 Movers & Shakers (LJ 3/15/06, p. 11; libraryjournal.com).

A proponent of Library 2.0, Bromberg believes that in our newly competitive environment, librarians must offer both convenience and a warm human touch—two qualities that have wowed users of QandANJ.

Bromberg’s day-to-day work is transforming librarians. He delivers what Rider University librarian Robert Lackie calls “state-of-the-art technology training programs and staff development opportunities for SJRLC’s 630 member libraries.” He coaches librarians as they move into leadership positions and shares best practices on blogs, wikis, electronic discussion lists, and chat.

Referring to Bromberg’s widely read collaborative blog, Library Garden, SJRLC director Karen Hyman says Bromberg develops people, communities, dialog, and collaborative services. She considers Bromberg an outstanding trainer as well as a “mentor extraordinaire,” who influences the entire profession through his work on the American Library Association’s (ALA) Continuing Library Education Network and Exchange Round Table, his mentoring of the five ALA Emerging Leaders charged to design a plan for offering free/cheap online training to ALA members, and his blog.

Bromberg thinks he’s successful because of his ability to “listen nonjudgmentally and ask good questions” and his “knack for helping people move past the negative description of the situation into constructive action.”

He’s hardwired with a built-in desire to help. And that desire is transformative for the rest of the profession.
