Bonnie Tijerina | Movers & Shakers 2010 – Tech Leaders

Library Journal March 15, 2010: Bonnie Tijerina, Mover & Shaker

Challenge Buster

In 2005, just two years into librarianship, Bonnie Tijerina, now a digital collections services librarian at the UCLA Library, wanted “leadership experience, management experience, and a true challenge,” she says. “So I made my own challenge.”

Motivated by a survey that revealed the frustrations of electronic resources librarians, who felt they lacked the tools and support to license, acquire, assess, and maintain their collections, Tijerina assembled a team of 20 colleagues to create a venue “to develop ideas, to find partners for projects, and to network with colleagues who do similar work,” she recalls. And thus the Electronic Resources & Libraries Conference (ER&L) was born. The inaugural meeting, held in Atlanta in 2006, drew 150 librarians. By 2009, that number had jumped to 350, with attendees from eight countries both in person and online.

Now in its fifth year, ER&L has been so successful that Tijerina has formed her own company to run it. Electronic Resources & Libraries, LLC, financially manages the event, orchestrates the schedules of committee members and volunteers, and does all of the conference planning and logistics. The 2010 conference was held February 1–3 at the University of Texas (UT) at Austin.

“Bonnie is an emerging leader in library science and has taken it upon herself to coordinate and disseminate as much information about electronic resource management as possible,” says nominator Jill Emery, head of acquisitions at UT Libraries. “Furthermore, she’s at the forefront of mobile application of access to library collections and digital-collection curation and management.”

In 2009, for the first time, scholarships for the conference supported the travel costs for several financially strapped or far-flung librarians. “I was especially excited about our winners from Pakistan and Zambia, who not only were able to present and participate in ER&L but were able to see the Pacific Ocean and walk on a beach in L.A.,” Tijerina says. “[It] made me realize the far-reaching impact this meeting has made.”
