Aspen Walker | Movers & Shakers 2011 – Marketers

Library Journal March 15, 2011: Aspen Walker, Mover & Shaker

Good 4 Libraries

Aspen Walker is a jack-(or jill)- of-all-trades, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. She supports the library director’s functions, working closely with the library board and senior management, preparing budgets, and dealing with long-range planning. Always in touch with those on the front lines, she also works at the reference desk and in the children’s and teen areas.

But it’s Walker’s enthusiasm for advocacy that has turned heads beyond Douglas County Libraries (DCL). She has almost single-handedly managed the social media and promotional work for Colorado’s “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” (BHAG) statewide library advocacy project. Its blog) offers intentionally easy-to-absorb information about how to get started with advocacy.

With the support of BHAG, library staffers are learning how to coordinate with community members to promote libraries. These efforts, plus Aspen’s Bad 3 Bad 4 Libraries blog)—created for library supporters—worked to spread the word beyond the library community to help defeat three anti-public service ballot proposals in November 2010.

Walker was DCL’s community relations specialist for six years before receiving her MLS. So it isn’t surprising that she believes, as she says, that “we all need to be library advocates and marketers.”

Her newest challenge is creating videos for her library’s stories project, which, she says, “showcase some of the ways libraries change lives, build community, and boost local business.”

Learning new videomaking skills epitomizes, for her, the essence of librarianship. “We spend a lot of time talking about lifelong learning,” she says. “It’s really important that we walk our talk.”
