Shanesha Brooks-Tatum has been hired as Project Coordinator and Writer for the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Library Alliance. She will conduct research in support of the HBCU Library Alliance’s Preserving Our History project.
Karlen Chase has been appointed Digital Services and Circuit Librarian, Western New York Library Resources Council (WNYLRC), Buffalo. She previously was part-time Circuit Librarian for WNYLRC’s Hospital Library Services Program.
Karen Culp, Director, Tiffin-Seneca Public Library, OH, has retired after 31 years of service. Tim Hagen, Head of Adult Services, has been named Interim Director.
Beth Dominianni is the new Director, Mark Twain Library, Redding, CT. She replaces the retiring Heather Morgan.
Skip Dye had been named Vice President, Library, Academic, and Random House Publisher Services. He leads a newly formed division of library and academic sales. He most recently was Vice President, Sales Operations and Services at Random House.
Qun Fang, CFO, Mid-Continent Public Library (MCPL), Independence, MO, was designated CFO of the Year in the nonprofit organization category by the Kansas City Business Journal. Fang was previously awarded four times a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence from the Government Finance Officers Association.
Patricia Froehlich, Youth Services Senior Consultant, Colorado State Library (CSL), will retire August 30. She began her tenure at CSL ten years ago as Public Library Consultant.
Ronald Jenkins is retiring at the end of July from his position as Director, Logan Library, UT, after more than 30 years of service. His successor is Robert Shupe, currently Director, Mohave County Library, Kingman, AZ.
Sandra Long, Director, Scranton Library, Madison, CT, for 41 years, has announced her retirement, effective October 14. A search is under way for her successor.
Meribah Mansfield will receive the 2011 Hall of Fame Librarian Award from the Ohio Library Council. Mansfield, who retired in 2010, was Director of Worthington Libraries (WL), OH, for almost 19 years. During her tenure, WL passed two levy initiatives, opened two new libraries, more than doubled annual circulation, and was chosen the 2007 Gale/Library Journal Library of the Year.
Vince Mariner has been appointed Deputy Director, Virtual Library of Virginia. He formerly was Statewide Coordinator of Pennsylvania’s Virtual Reference Service, known as Ask Here PA.
Kelly Miller, Business Librarian, Springfield–Greene County Library District (S-GCLD), MO, has been named Manager of the Park Central Branch Library, S-GCLD. She also as well will continue in her role as Business Librarian.
Richard Miller has been appointed Executive Director, Osterhout Free Library, Wilkes-Barre, PA, and will also serve as Administrator, Luzerne County Librarie in Wilkes-Barre, effective early September 2011. He currently is Director of Library Services, McBride Memorial Library, Berwick, PA.
Laura Mischke has been appointed Library Department Chair, St. Luke’s College, Sioux City, IA. She previously was a Teacher and Librarian for Lawton-Bronson Community Schools, IA, and served as Interim Director, South Sioux City Public Library.
Michael Piper has been named Interim Executive Director, Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS), formed July 1 with the consolidation of five systems: Alliance Library System, DuPage Library System, Metropolitan Library System, North Suburban Library System, and Prairie Area Library System. Piper previously was Executive Director, Indiana Cooperative Library Services Authority (INCOLSA).
Greg Romer has been hired as Director, Newcomerstown Public Library, OH. He formerly was Adult Services Librarian, Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, KS.
Carlton Sears, Director, Public Library of Youngstown & Mahoning County, OH, announced his upcoming retirement, effective March 30, 2012, after 15 years of service. His next challenge will be working with the Harwood Institute for Public Innovation.
Mark Stover is the new Dean, University Library, California State University–Northridge. He comes from San Diego State University, where he was Interim Dean of Library and Information Access.
Erik Surber has been chosen as the new Director, Waukee Public Library, IA, effective September 1. He currently is Senior Librarian, North Hollywood Regional Branch Library, Los Angeles Public Library.
Kristi Tornquist has been named Chief University Librarian, South Dakota State University, Brookings, effective July 22, replacing the retiring David Gleim. Tornquist was Dean, Learning Resources and Technology Services, St. Cloud State University, MN.
Donald Wathen, Director, Henderson County Public Library, KY, has retired, effective August 1, after 33 years in the position. He is succeeded by Assistant Director Pam Vincent.
Kate Wittenberg has been appointed Managing Director, Portico, a division of Ithaka, effective September 1. She takes over from Eileen Fenton, who will remain Executive Vice President of Technology & Content Services. Wittenberg currently is Project Director, Client and Partnership Development, Ithaka S+R.
New appointments at the University Library, University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill, include Jodi Berkowitz as Pruitt-Shanks Project Archivist, a one-year position. Berkowitz most recently was Legacy Finding Aids Archivist, Technical Services Department, Wilson Special Collections Library, UNC. Emily Silverman is the new Associate Director of Library Development. She previously was Resource Development Director, Chatham Habitat for Humanity, Pittsboro, NC.
In Memoriam
Roberta Cheney, former Director, Alma Powell Branch, Kalamazoo Public Library (KPL), MI, has died at the age of 94. She was Director, Cass County Library (now Cass District Library), Cassopolis, MI, before coming to KPL in 1971; she retired in 1982. Cheney was President, Michigan Library Association 1975–76 and 1972 Michigan Librarian of the Year.
Elisabeth “Libby” Gaskill Coombs, former Librarian at Fairfield University, CT, has died at the age of 89. Coombs enlisted as a WAVE in World War II, working as a Naval Aviator Trainer and in naval intelligence. After earning an MLS later in life, she became Assistant Librarian for Technical Services at Fairfield, working there for 19 years. After retiring, she worked for EBSCO as a Field Account Service Manager.
David Crane, former Librarian, Boise State University, ID, has died at the age of 76. He retired as Head of Cataloging in 1990.
John Kallenberg, retired Director, Fresno County Public Library, CA, has died; he was 69. He held the position from 1976 to 2003 and was President of the California Library Association in 1987.
