STAR HIGHLIGHT | HOWARD COUNTY LIBRARY,
COLUMBIA, MD

Serving a community with several high-tech companies and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Howard County Library System (HCLS) focuses on its mission: “Public education for all,” says Valerie J. Gross, library president and CEO.

Nevertheless, the library’s “curriculum,” the word used instead of “programs,” serves up the sciences and more. “We aim to be the launching point that inspires the future scientists, engineers, mathematicians in this area,” Gross says.

Visits from best-selling authors, including Alexander McCall Smith (below) and Diana Gabaldon, draw library patrons in droves. Partnerships with other local organizations have led to healthy lifestyles activities, academic contests, a community civility project, and this winter’s opening of the HCLS Charles E. Miller Branch & Historical Center.—Marta Murvosh
