Spring has sprung, summer is on its way, and here’s your chance to find out about hot books you’ll want to read this summer. Author Susan Jane Gilman and Grand Central Publishing’s Senior Editor Helen Atsma will discuss Susan’s upcoming novel THE ICE CREAM QUEEN OF ORCHARD STREET, a debut novel following Susan’s hilarious nonfiction. In addition, National Book Award finalist Josh Ferris will join with his editor, Little, Brown’s Senior Vice President and Publisher Reagan Arthur, to discuss Josh’s upcoming novel, TO RISE AGAIN AT A DECENT HOUR.

Plus, Hachette’s Adult Library Marketing Team—Ali Coughlin, Melissa Nicholas and Karen Torres—will feature more of Hachette’s hot reads. Moderated by LJ’s Prepub Alert editor, Barbara Hoffert.

  • Joshua Ferris - Author,To Rise Again at a Decent Hour, Little Brown

Joshua Ferris is the author of two previous novels, Then We Came to the End and The Unnamed. The awards and honors for Ferris’ first book, THEN WE CAME TO THE END, were numerous, prominent, and prestigious: Finalist for the National Book Award, one of the New York Times Book Review’s 10 Best Books of the Year, winner of the PEN/Hemingway award, and longlisted for the Guardian First Novel Award. The hardcover edition of Ferris’s second novel, THE UNNAMED, was a #1 IndieNext list pick in January 2010, and was been greeted with resounding acclaim from coast to coast.  Joshua’s third novel is entitled TO RISE AGAIN AT A DECENT HOUR and will be published in May 2014.

  • Susan Jane Gilman – Author, The Ice cream Queen of Orchard Street, Grand Central Publishing​ 

Susan Jane Gilman is the author of of Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress and Kiss My Tiara.  She has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Michigan, and has written commentary for The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, and Ms. magazine, among others. Her fiction and essays have received several literary awards. Next up is the novel THE ICE CREAM QUEEN OF ORCHARD STREET which will be published in June 2014.

  • Reagan Arthur - Senior Vice President and Publisher, Little Brown

Reagan Arthur is the Senior Vice President and Publisher of Little, Brown. Writers she has worked with include Kate Atkinson, Josh Bazell, Eleanor Catton (winner of this year’s Booker Prize), Joshua Ferris, Tina Fey, Elin Hilderbrand, Kathleen Kent, Denise Mina, George Pelecanos, Dan Simmons, and Ian Rankin to name just a few. This is a very impressive group of bestselling and prizewinning writers.

  • Helen Atsma - Senior Editor, Grand Central Publishing​ 

Helen Atsma is a Senior Editor at Grand Central Publishing; she primarily acquires literary fiction, memoir, and narrative nonfiction. Karen Torres is the V.P. Director of Account Marketing and Retail Operations at Hachette Book Group USA, which includes the imprints: Grand Central Publishing, Little, Brown & Co., Faith Words/ Jericho Books/ Center Street, Orbit/ Yen Press, Redhook and Little Brown Books for Young Readers. Karen’s passion for great books is evident in her service to booksellers, librarians and book club leaders involving them at the earliest stages of the publication process partnering with them in seeding the market with excitement for upcoming books.

  • Ali Coughlin – Associate National Account Manager, Hachette Book Group

Ali Coughlin is an Associate National Account Manager at Hachette Book Group. She supports Karen and Melissa in Hachette’s outreach to librarians at conferences, buzz presentations, and preview events.   • Melissa Nicholas – Associate Director of Account Marketing and Retail Operations, Hachette Book Group

Melissa Nicholas is the Associate Director of Account Marketing & Retail Operations at Hachette Book Group. After graduation from Fordham University, Melissa worked as a Bookseller and General Manager before moving to Hachette in 2011. At Hachette, Melissa works closely with Karen Torres and Ali Coughlin on Library Marketing efforts. Melissa has attended 10 library conferences and 14 library buzz panels and is looking forward to many more.

  • Barbara Hoffert - Editor, Prepub Alert, Library Journal

Barbara Hoffert is Editor, LJ Prepub Alert; past chair of the Materials Selection Committee of the RUSA (Reference and User Services Assn.) division of the American Library Association; and past president, treasurer, and awards chair of the National Book Critics Circle, on whose board she served for four terms. She was editor of LJ’s book review for 18 years, routinely introduces author panels at United for Libraries, and has been involved in organizing LJ’s Day of Dialog since its inception.
