Library People News: Hires, Promotions, Retirements, and Obituaries

Deirdre (Dee) Brennan, Executive Director, Reaching Across Illinois Library Systems (RAILS), received the 2016 Illinois Library Association’s Atkinson Memorial/Demco Award, recognizing sustained activity and contributions having a lasting impact on librarianship.

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) named Catherine Davidson as Visiting Program Officer for Scholarly Communication Initiatives from September 2016 through June 2017. Davidson, a 2009–10 graduate of the ARL Leadership Fellows program, is Associate University Librarian for Collections and Research at York University, Toronto.

St. John’s University, Jamaica, NY, has appointed Valeda F. Dent as Dean of University Libraries. Previously Dent served as Dean and Chief Operating Officer of University Libraries at Long Island University, where she also was Interim Director of the Palmer School of Library Science.

The Berkeley Public Library, CA, Board of Library Trustees has selected Heidi Dolamore as Director of Library Services. She previously served as Assistant Director of the San José Public Library, CA.

Roswell Encina began as Senior Adviser at the Library of Congress on September 6 after nearly ten years as Director of Communications at the Enoch Pratt Free Library (EPFL), Baltimore. Encina will join former EPFL CEO Carla D. Hayden, who was sworn in as Librarian of Congress on September 14 (see p. 14).

Columbus Metropolitan Library (CML) hired Nate Oliver as Manager, Gahanna Branch. Oliver has served in many roles at CML since joining in 1994, but he returns to the branch where he served as Circulation Manager from 1999 to 2004.

Ocean State Libraries (OSL), RI, named Susan Moreland Straub its new Executive Director. Prior to her arrival at OSL in January as Cataloger/eZone Support, Straub worked at North Kingstown Free Library, RI, as both Assistant Director of Technology and Access Services and Deputy Director.
