Libraries use those weird call number systems becasue the cataloging systems were done by geeks and nerds who are extremely lazy on one hand [like writing things out] and yet have volumes of time on hand to learn and use complex systems [like call numbers].

the real truth is that librarians simply do not think the whole heading will fit on the spine label of the book.

The funny part about the book store method is nothing more then taking the LC subject headings and writing out them out, albiet fiction may be sorted differently. It seems nobody can agree on how to sort fiction.

Why do libraries use those weird call number systems? Why don't they just arrange books by subject and then put up signs like they do in book stores?
