Google Books is now part of Google Play which is supposed to be a one stop shop for entertainment. It looks very similar to Amazon's offerings. You can buy music, movies and ebooks. There are many classic books that are free, I'm assuming those are what was just Google Books. So I don't think it will go away. The amount free books may not grow much though.

I like what Google has done with Google Books, I find it amazing that they have achieved so much in such a comparatively short amount of time. And while I don't think they could ever (to me) replace picking a book up from the shelves (maybe I'm just old fashioned that way) I'm still glad that they are doing what they are doing, that digital preservation is somewhat comforting. Then I read about people thinking it will lead to Big Broth and bitching out libraries and laugh at the sheer stupidity. While Google seems to be drawing back in some ways, they are extending themselves further in others, particularly in social media, so, you know, hopefully they’re not dying.
