Placements & Salaries Survey: Survey Methods

For the 2012 Placements & Salaries Survey, LJ received responses either through the institutional survey or individuals representing 41 of the 48 LIS schools surveyed in the U.S. and from 2,162 of the reported LIS graduates. The University of Michigan and the University of Texas at Austin prepared their own surveys.

Schools were provided the choice of responding by paper or electronic survey with most choosing the electronic format. Some graduates and schools reported incomplete information, rendering some data unusable. For schools that did not complete the institutional survey, data were taken from graduate surveys, and thus are not full representation of all graduating classes.

We are pleased that some schools that were unable to participate in the past were able to do so this year, including: Queens College and the University of Southern Mississippi.

The following schools declined to participate, did not respond to calls for participation, or had no graduate participation: University of Arizona, Emporia State University, University of Maryland, North Carolina Central, North Carolina Greensboro, University of South Carolina, Southern Connecticut State University, St. John’s University, St. Katherine’s University, University of Tennessee, and Valdosta State University. The Canadian programs, including Alberta, British Columbia, Dalhousie, McGill, Montreal, Toronto, and Western Ontario conduct their own annual salary and placements surveys, and do not participate in the LJ Annual Survey. The University of Puerto Rico does not participate.
