Library Construction Update: New and Renovated Buildings, 08/31/12

Hennepin County Library, MN, will close down its Walker Library on September 22 to make way for a wholly new 31,000 square foot facility, to be opened in 2014. The new $12 million library (rendering pictured here) is designed by VJAA (Vincent James Associates Architects) and will feature generous use of glass to allow for natural light and visual links to the outside streets and mall.

Big doings in Denver, with the August 11 grand opening of the Sam Gary Branch Library in the Stapleton Town Center. The 28,000 square foot facility cost $11.6 million, funded through the Better Denver Bond measure approved in 2007. “The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, CA, in June began a 15-month overhaul of its main exhibition hall and a complete reinstallation based on 100 rare items from the collection. The construction is expected to cost $2.5 million. Not to be outdone, the Huntington Library Japanese Garden (pictured) recently completed a $6.8 million renovation. ” […]

“Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL), OH, had more to cheer about than one groundbreaking with the recent renovation of the Fairview Park Branch. The 44,000 square foot branch project carved out a Technology Learning Center and a dedicated teen space, while also encompassing additional seating, self-checkout machines, and a redesigned popular materials area. A vibrantly hued, travel-themed children’s Play, Learn and Grow area, funded through the Fairview Park Branch Trust Fund, features three airplanes to simulate a child-sized Fairview Park Airport, replicas of London’s Big Ben and Paris’s Eiffel Tower, and an aquarium to represent an Australian barrier reef.” […]

The Old Town Library of Poudre River Public Library District, Fort Collins, CO, has completed an eight-month renovation and expansion project that has added 6000 square feet of new construction and re­deployed another 3000 square feet to the 34,000 square foot structure. Along with an interior remodel, the $5 million project built down from the library’s second-floor overhangs for flexibility and room to grow. On the first floor, the library now has a new fiction section, a larger area for children’s programming and family computer seating, a multipurpose community room, a combined space for vending items and quick Internet visits, a “new media” area, and an automated materials handler. Beginning with the purchase in 2006 of an abandoned Walmart store, the McAllen Public Library (MPL), TX, has now seen the fruits of its $26 million labors. At 123,000 square feet, the new MPL, which opened in December 2011, is the largest single-story library in the country and has won the International Interior Design Association’s 2012 Library Interior Design Competition. MS&R Ltd. of Minneapolis is behind the award-­winning design, with exteriors and project lead from Boultinghouse Simpson Architects of McAllen. […]

Through a $4.4 million contribution from Whitemarsh Township residents the ­Karabotses, plus a $1.2 million capital campaign, the 1971 building was remodeled and expanded from 7000 square feet to 18,000 square feet. Library Construction Update: New and Renovated Buildings, 06/15/12

A new library is on the horizon for the City of Boca Raton, FL, following the June groundbreaking for the new Boca Raton Downtown Library. The 42,000 square foot facility will be the second of two libraries approved in a 2003 $19.8 million bond measure; the Boca Raton Spanish River Library opened in 2008. Costing $10 million, the Downtown Library is designed by PGAL of Boca Raton in the Mediterranean architectural style of Addison Mizner (1872–1933), emblematic of south Florida, and includes pedestrian-friendly walkways and a plaza.
