Library Field Responds to Orlando Tragedy

In the wake of the shooting in Orlando’s Pulse nightclub on the night of June 12, which killed 49 people and injured 53 others, library administration and staff, organizations and vendors have stepped up with statements of solidarity, offers of help, and opportunities to join forces with the GLBT and Latinx communities—the shooting occurred during Pulse’s Latin night—to mourn those killed and wounded.

Game Design Proves Popular at Orange County Center

Since its grand opening in February 2014, the Orange County Library System’s (OCLS) Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation, and Creativity has offered patrons access to high-tech tools ranging from 3-D printers to flight simulators. In the past year and a half, the center, located in the library’s central branch in Orlando, FL, has become a locus of creativity within the community, helping patrons connect and collaborate with others who share their interests. Ormilla Vengersammy, Melrose Center manager and Technology and Education Department Head for OCLS, described the center’s growing video game design program as one such example.

Orange County Library System Expands Computer Training Program with Treehouse

Following a successful pilot with the Orange County (FL) Library System (OCLS), online technology education provider Treehouse Island has launched a subscription-based service that will allow library patrons to learn programming skills at home or on any library computer.

Orlando Library Donation to Build Creative Technology Center

A $1 million donation to the Orlando Public Library will be used to create The Dorothy Lumley Melrose Center for Technology, Innovation & Creativity, the library announced April 16.
