Memphis-Shelby County New Central PL a Hit

By LJ Staff

The Memphis-Shelby County Public Library, TN, reports that the new $70
million Central Library is drawing record crowds since opening in November 2001.
Usage has increased 92 percent compared to the past year, circulation is up a
hefty 53 percent, and new library card requests are off the scale with a 339
percent increase. The library did have to respond to patrons who carped about
the lack of enough PCs; the library then added 23 additional computers to the
100 originally planned. The physical design of the building also was criticized
in the local Commercial Appeal by an art museum curator and architecture
scholar, who decried the designers’ supposed lack of vision, saying that parts
of the library façade defied “intuition and logic.”
