ALA Names Keith Michael Fiels New Executive Director

By Debra Lau

Keith Michael Fiels, director of the Massachusetts Board of Library
Commissioners, has been appointed new executive director of the American Library
Association (ALA), effective July 1.

Fiels, an ALA member since 1976, has more than 15 years of senior
administrative library experience and has worked in public and school libraries.
He remains active in ALA committees and divisions, as well as various state
library associations.

“The prospect of serving as the executive director of the association is a
lifelong dream,” Fiels says. “What we do as librarians is so important for our
communities, our democracy, and our future.”

The ALA executive board and staff interviewed finalists in April at its
headquarters in Chicago. “Mr. Fiels brings a wealth of experience in many
library settings and a combination of attributes that are well-suited to
managing ALA in the first years of the 21st century,” says ALA President John
Berry. Fiels, who holds a B.A. and an MLS from the State University of New York,
Buffalo, is on a three-year contract, and his salary is $183,000. William R.
Gordon, ALA’s retiring executive director, will assist in the transition through
August. Fiels will be introduced at ALA’s annual conference in Atlanta, June
