Children’s Books, Donations Sought for Damaged Library

The McDowell Public Library (MPL) in Welch, WV, is still in recovery mode
from the floods and mudslides that wreaked havoc across several states earlier
this month. Declared a federal disaster zone, rural areas suffered floodwaters
as high as 12 feet. MPL had its share of damage, losing all its public-access
computers, sofas and chairs, and most of its children’s collection; it is still
closed. Due to extensive mud and sewage water damage, all the books have been
removed to allow for power washing and dry wall reconstruction. Services are
currently being tested, and MPL hopes to reopen some time next month. Interim
Library Director Donna Morgan said that she would especially appreciate people
sending a copy of their favorite children’s book, plus $1. The address is:
