REFORMA Announces 2002 Mora Award

By Luann Toth

The Multnomah County (OR) Library has been named the recipient of the 2002
Estela and Raúl Mora Award, which recognizes participation in Día de los
Niños, Día de los Libros
, a national initiative to celebrate childhood and
foster bilingual literacy. The library’s month-long celebration leading up to
the April 30th observance was coordinated by Spanish Outreach Specialist Marcela
Villagrán and brought together community agencies and businesses, students and
performers, parents, children, and the media for an array of 25 different
cultural programs held at six branches.

This is the third annual award to be granted; the Austin (TX) Public Library
and El Paso (TX) Public Libray have been previously honored. A $1,000 stipend
and a commemorative plaque will be formally presented to the Multnomah County
Library at the American Library Association’s (ALA) midwinter meeting in
Philadelphia, January 24-29, 2003. Reforma, the National Association to Promote
Library and Informational Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, an ALA
affiliate, administers this award.
