Florida State Librarian Wilkins to Retire

By LJ Staff

Barratt Wilkins, one of the country’s most veteran state librarians, will
retire as state librarian and director of the Florida Division of Library and
Information Services as of January 6. “He has been an outstanding public servant
and state librarian, and we will all miss him,” said Secretary of State Jim
Smith. Wilkins was appointed state librarian in 1977; he has headed both the
Southeastern Library Association and the Chief Officers of State Library
Agencies. He extended library services to all counties in Florida and
established a cooperative library system, the Florida Library Network, and the
Virtual Library of Florida, among other accomplishments.
