By LJ Staff

John Lonsak will retire this week as director of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, Parma, OH. He has worked there 35 years, spending the last 7 1/2 years in his current job. When Lonsak came on board, recounted the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the library system had gone through 10 directors in little more than 20 years. Over his tenure, circulation has risen more than 40 percent, to 13.4 million items from 9.5 million items. In 2001, Lonsak and Cleveland Public Library Director Andrew Venable shared the Ohio Library Council’s Librarian of the Year award, for creating the Greater Access Library Card, which can be used in any Cleveland PL or Cuyahoga County branch, as well as at libraries in the Clevnet system.
