China’s National Library Closes as “Preventive Measure” Against SARS

By LJ Staff

China closed its National Library in Beijing April 23 as a precaution against the SARS outbreak, which has claimed more than 100 lives in that nation. Statistics for the city itself, as of April 25, were 39 deaths and nearly 775 cases. Library officials said that the facility would reopen May 6. A library spokesperson insisted that the move was a “preventive measure” only, since large numbers of people gather in the library, and that no staffers had been diagnosed with the illness.
