Possible Summer Opening for Lincoln Library

By LJ Staff

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, Springfield, IL, could open this summer, although state officials had hoped to cut the ribbon on the facility on Lincoln’s birthday last February 16. The structure of the library essentially is complete, but important extras such as climate control are not completely functional. “We don’t want to have the collection exposed to high heat or humidity for weeks,” said Maynard Crossland, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. “We can’t take the risk that something won’t work right.” Moving the collection from the state capitol building into the library will take an estimated six weeks, with reference materials arriving first. The museum component of the facility will not open for another year.
