Virginia Beach PL Bookmobile Service Threatened

By LJ Staff

To save approximately $194,000, Virginia Beach City Manager James Spore has recommended that the public library’s bookmobile be terminated July 1 after 44 years of service. Spore claims that with the opening of the new Princess Anne branch later this year, which will serve about 65 percent of the population now using the bookmobile, the library on wheels will cease to be necessary. Many of those who use it disagree and want the service to be continued despite the new branch. Library Director Marcy Sims told the Virginia-Pilot “It’s a very personalized service, and it taps into the old days of library service delivery. That’s probably why there is such passion surrounding the bookmobile and its role within the community.”
