Husband Charged in Library Worker’s Slaying

By LJ Staff

Police have charged George Kallas with the aggravated murder of his wife, Barbara, a part-time worker at the Lorain Public Library. The killing took place in the library’s parking lot, January 20, according to the Morning Journal. Library staff told police that George Kallas was seen in the lot before his wife arrived for work around 4 p.m. He shot her five times with a handgun and then entered the library and gave the weapon to an auxiliary police officer, explaining that he had killed his wife. The couple apparently had argued earlier that week over her working at the library, with George Kallas claiming that he was concerned for his wife’s safety. The argument apparently turned violent and Barbara Kallas called the police. Officers removed several firearms from the residence at the time, but did not file domestic violence charges against George Kallas. It is unclear how he acquired another weapon.
