Libraries Outside Chicago Seek Tax Hikes

By LJ Staff

Four suburban library districts southwest of Chicago, hoping to stave off further service cuts, are seeking tax hikes March 16, “We’re at a plateau financially,” New Lenox Library Director Jo Ann Potenziani told the Chicago Tribune. “If our referendum fails, we’d have to continue making service cuts.” Last year, the district laid off six staff members and cut library hours from 68 to 44 a week. In Mokena, where weekly library hours have been cut by 14, a failed referendum will lead to five-day service, a loss of a day.
