University of Oregon Book Thief Arrested

By LJ Staff

The Eugene Police Department has charged local resident Douglas Collver for allegedly stealing as many as 250 rare books from the University of Oregon’s Knight Library and selling them on eBay, the Internet auction site. The arrest comes after the library reported the books stolen, thanks to a sharp-eyed book dealer in Los Angeles who noticed a faint library imprint on a book and contacted the library. According to the Oregon Daily Emerald, the university’s student newspaper, University Librarian Deborah Carver told reporters she is confident that a significant number of the books on Collver’s list were from the library. Carver told the newspaper she doesn’t know how Collver was able to get the books past the security system, and said the library has no plans to change the system.
