Denver PL Warns That Two Branches Might Close

By LJ Staff

Asked to prepare for a possible budget cut up to six percent for 2005, the Denver Public Library projects that two branch libraries might have to be closed. “Absolutely no one likes the idea of library branches closing,” a mayoral spokeswoman told the Denver Post. “We are interested to hear the library’s rationale for its proposals as well as what other savings options they explored.” Library Director Rick Ashton noted that library had already closed each of the 23 branches for an extra day each week this year. The library’s budget this year stands at $28 million. Even for a three- percent budget cut, the library proposes to close one branch and to raise fines from 20 to 25 cents.
