Library, Friends Group Split in San Bernardino

By LJ Staff

The San Bernardino County Library, CA, and the Friends of the Library at the Loma Linda Branch have had an acrimonious split. According to the San Bernardino County Sun, county librarian Ed Kieczykowski gave the group a deadline to provide a list of members and a set of bylaws to continue fundraising. In response, Meryl McDowell, president of the Friends group, said, "We are convinced that Mr. Kieczykowski’s efforts to excommunicate the Friends were precipitated by our request for an accounting of the Friends’ funds." County officials told the newspaper that the funds belong to the library, not the friends group, since the donations were aimed at improving the branch. Thus, the library will keep the 400 to 500 videos formerly controlled by the Friends and will have the successor Friends group, when formed, manage the videos.
