NBCC to Separate Biography and Autobiography for Awards

By LJ Staff

The National Book Critics Circle (NBCC) board has added a new category to its annual awards by separating its current Biography/Autobiography classification into separate entities with a prize for each. ‘After years of discussion, we decided books driven by personal narrative deserve their own category,’ said LJ editor and NBCC president Rebecca Miller. In the organization’s Fall newsletter announcing the decision, member Linda Wolfe wrote: ‘Why did the board create it at this particular juncture? Because it had come to recognize how difficult it was for a memoir, any memoir, to unseat a major biography.’ The five finalists now in six categories will be announced January 14, 2006, with the winners selected at a gala ceremony in March.
