NY Review of Books Founder Epstein Dies

Barbara Epstein, found and coeditor of The New York Review of Books succumbed to lung cancer June16 at age 77. Her position at The New York Review of Books made her a core figure in New York publishing and literary circles. Despite that pretige and power, Epstein is remembered as a gentle gracious, and generous woman. "Barbara was one of the most influential editors of our time, Janet Malcolm told the New York Times, "but she had none of the qualities – aggressiveness, ruthlessness, egotism – that are commonly associated with powerful editors." Epstein worked at several of Manhattan’s top houses, including Doubleday where she edited Ann Frank’s Diary of a Young Girl.
