Update: Toronto Library To Sell Ads

The Toronto Public Library (TPL) board decided to sell advertising in the library at its February 27 meeting. The board will hire a contractor to sell advertising on the backs of due-date slips, at no cost to the library, and a consultant for $10,000 to look for other in-library advertising opportunities.

Harvard Library Forms Councils with Union, Names Group Heads

The Harvard Library management will form three “joint councils” with the Harvard Union of Clerical and Technical Workers (HUCTW) to negotiate the library system’s reorganization, according to Harvard student newspaper The Crimson. U.C. Library Renovations Double Visitors

Usage of the newly renovated McHenry Library at UC Santa Cruz has doubled since the renovation. M. Mandel Foundation Gives $5 Million to West Palm Beach Library, Now Renamed

Paralibrarian of the Year 2012: Linda Dahlquist

A 17-year veteran with the Volusia County Public Library (VCPL), Dahlquist was promoted through every paraprofessional classification in just over three years. She is now a library associate, and her work is so respected that her fellow staffers, including the librarians, named her VCPL’s “Unsung Hero” and presented her with their Customer Service Award as well.

Because of the range of her duties, her creative initiatives to improve library service, her teamwork, and her model efforts to help library users, Linda Dahlquist is LJ’s 2012 Paralibrarian of the Year, an award sponsored by DEMCO, Inc.

PLA Conference Preview 2012: Great Expectations | Philadelphia, March 13–17

Expectations are very optimistic for attendance at the Public Library Association (PLA) biennial conference in Philadelphia, March 13–17. Preregistrations at this writing were already coming in at a rate even with or a bit ahead of the attendance in 2010; with librarians and exhibitors, total attendance might exceed 8000.

Most Students Don’t Use Social Media to Study
