Don’t Miss Danish Library Director Rolf Hapel at PLA

Scandinavian libraries have long been in the lead in shaping their institutions for the digital age. Rolf Hapel, director of Aarhus Public Libraries, Denmark, will take attendees on a visual tour of the community-based process that helped design the new main library and the initiatives being adopted to transform libraries. Join him on Friday, March 16, 8:15-9:30, in room 113 ABC, for “Transforming Public Libraries from Institutions of the Industrial Age to Change Agents for the Networked Society.”

Among the initiatives he’ll discuss are mobile library apps, ebook, music, and film lending, and a focus on user-driven innovation, as well as the blurring of lines between physical and virtual space in library design. He’ll also focus on co-creation–with users as well as library partners–which has led to turning the library into “maker space” (check out this video: Transformation Lab – Prototyping the Future).

Denmark’s libraries face similar challenges to those in the United States: dealing with an aging population, lack of funds, and an increasing gap between the information-rich and the information-poor. Hear about their creative solutions.
