News Briefs for August 1, 2016

On July 14, the American Association of Geographers, a nonprofit scientific and educational society founded in 1904, announced that it is donating its archive to the Library of Congress (LC), to be housed in LC’s Geography and Map Division.

The City of Wichita, KS, and the Wichita Public Library Foundation announced June 16 a $500,000 gift from Cox Communications as part of its “Margin of Excellence Campaign” to build Wichita’s new Advanced Learning Library.

The American Library Association has awarded the Indianapolis Public Library its second “Library of the Future” award in the past eight years.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) on July 15 announced 21 grants totaling $972,000 to support museum services for Native Americans and Native Hawaiians, made through the IMLS Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services grant program.

Eight libraries are being recognized for strategic communications efforts with the 2016 John Cotton Dana Awards for outstanding library public relations, consisting of $10,000 grants to each recipient from the H.W. Wilson Foundation. The winners are Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, NC; Chicago PL; Houston PL; New Orleans PL; Northwestern University Libraries, Evanston, IL; San Diego County Library; Scholes Library at Alfred University, NY; and Vancouver PL, BC.

The Loyola/Notre Dame Library, Loyola University, MD, became an affiliate member of the University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions Library Consortium on July 1.

The Texas Historical Records Advisory Board has announced the creation of the Archival Award of Excellence to recognize significant achievements in preserving and improving access to historical records by a Texas archival institution or individual.

The University of Cincinnati (UC) announced the formation of a new academic press on May 26, with a focus on social justice and community engagement. Operations will be supported by UC Libraries.
